This program enables gifted writers to refine their skills through a structured academic curriculum and a supportive writing community. The M.F.A. curriculum grants participants exclusive access to exceptional resources, such as lectures and workshops led by renowned guest authors, discussions with literary agents and editors, plus access to facilities like the Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center in Kyle and the Clark House in Smithville. Annually, two program alumni are awarded residencies at these prestigious literary sites. Students gain advanced literary and theoretical knowledge while developing expertise to excel as professionals in their chosen genre. Through mastery of craft elements in their specialization and a deepened awareness of writing processes and discipline, participants showcase their artistic growth.
As a terminal degree, the M.F.A. qualifies recipients for university teaching positions. Alumni frequently establish careers as working writers across fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and screenwriting, while their refined writing abilities prove advantageous in diverse professional settings. Texas State program graduates demonstrate competitiveness comparable to literature Ph.D. candidates.
