Aim for the pinnacle of academic excellence in chemistry and develop into a skilled researcher. The Chemistry Department at UMass Boston provides an extensive PhD program focused on fostering innovative and ethical scientists. Doctoral candidates can specialize in six distinct areas: Biological Chemistry, Chemistry Education Research, Green Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physical/Analytical Chemistry, with strong encouragement for cross-disciplinary studies. Participants engage in laboratory research from the program's outset, customizing their studies to align with their scientific pursuits.
The degree requires completion of 60 credit hours, including two foundational courses, three specialized electives, a graduate seminar, and dissertation research. Core course requirements vary by concentration. Notably, Green Chemistry principles are integrated throughout all doctoral curricula. The program concludes with a public research defense and formal dissertation publication.
Our Department stands out in Green Chemistry education, pioneering the nation's first doctoral program through our PhD in Chemistry/Green Chemistry Track. This concentration specifically equips chemistry PhD candidates to lead, develop, and execute chemical research using environmentally conscious methods that minimize ecological and health impacts. Students gain practical experience, methodologies, and competencies for conducting sustainable scientific investigations. The Green Chemistry curriculum's strength stems from its interconnected, multidisciplinary research focus. Our faculty prioritizes socially beneficial research, an orientation evident across all academic levels through our course offerings.
