The Chemistry Department, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts in Teaching Chemistry, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. M.A.T. candidates enroll through the School of Professional Development. Ph.D. students can pursue dissertation research across various chemistry specializations aligned with faculty expertise or explore interdisciplinary subjects with guidance from other departments. Collaborative opportunities exist with multiple programs, featuring optional focus areas in chemical physics and chemical biology.

Stony Brook researchers analyze diverse organic molecular structures through advanced methods like high-field FT-NMR spectroscopy (examining 1H, 13C, 19F nuclei) and X-ray crystallography. Computational modeling tools like Gaussian and Macromodel run on graphic workstations to interpret and forecast molecular conformations and reactivity. Temperature-controlled NMR studies explore conformational dynamics in macrocycles and synthetic host-guest systems, while also examining proton transfer in polyamines and ligand exchange processes. Stereochemical analysis helps elucidate reaction pathways, including pericyclic and biomimetic transformations. High-pressure laboratory equipment (exceeding 200,000 psi) enables investigation of reaction mechanisms through activation volume measurements.
