The Master of Arts program serves as both a valuable professional qualification and a stepping stone toward doctoral studies. Admission requirements include holding an appropriate bachelor's degree (or equivalent qualification like Vordiplom or Zwischenprüfung) and demonstrating potential for graduate-level work in German studies. Any gaps in academic preparation or language proficiency in spoken/written German must be addressed before earning the MA degree.
This two-track MA program provides comprehensive training in German studies while encouraging interdisciplinary exploration. Students can customize their studies around specialized areas like gender studies, migration, film and literature, national identity, German-Jewish studies, postcolonial studies, medieval studies, philology, or German-Scandinavian connections. Alternatively, students may design their curriculum based on faculty expertise available through our program, university resources, the Five College Consortium, and our global exchange partnerships.
