The Master's Degree in Scandinavian Studies offers two specialized tracks. Students can select between Scandinavian Languages and Literature or Scandinavian Area Studies. Both programs focus on achieving proficiency in a chosen Nordic language (Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, or Swedish) while providing comprehensive understanding of Nordic literature and culture. The Scandinavian Area Studies track additionally requires extensive knowledge of history, society, politics, film, and folklore, with specialization options including: Baltic studies, film studies, history, folklore and mythology, political science, second language acquisition, or translation studies.

Within the University of Washington's Department of Scandinavian Languages and Literature, the Scandinavian Area Studies concentration in the Master of Arts program enables students to specialize in a particular field while developing foundational expertise in the department's core literary curriculum.
