This dual degree program merges curriculum from Historic Preservation and Urban Studies and Planning, allowing students to earn both a Master of Historic Preservation and Master of Community Planning with reduced credit requirements compared to pursuing each degree independently. Graduates of this combined program gain exceptional qualifications for careers bridging planning and preservation—fields that have historically been interconnected. For instance, Maryland's State Historic Preservation Office, the Maryland Historical Trust, shares facilities with the state's planning department. Preservation also plays an integral role in planning departments across Baltimore City and counties like Prince George's and Montgomery. Program alumni are equipped to work in either field (a valuable advantage during economic downturns) and, more significantly, possess the expertise to address preservation planning challenges in communities throughout Maryland and beyond.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
