The Classics Department provides a graduate program specializing in either Latin or combined Latin and Greek studies, culminating in a Master of Arts degree. This curriculum enables students to engage in intensive study of classical languages and literature while gaining a more comprehensive understanding of Greco-Roman culture. Participants select between two degree paths: Latin exclusively or a combination of Latin and Greek. While advanced language courses are mandatory, students may also enroll in relevant courses from other departments. Prospective students should note that admission requires advanced undergraduate proficiency in at least one classical language (preferably both Latin and ancient Greek). Alumni pursue diverse paths, including doctoral studies in Classics-related fields, secondary education positions, or careers beyond classical studies.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
