Classics explores the rich heritage of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations in all their dimensions: their languages (Greek and Latin), literary works and myths, historical events, philosophical thought, and artistic achievements. This field connects us to our origins and shapes our contemporary identity. Modern concepts like citizenship, democracy, social movements, aesthetics, and relationships often trace back to ancient traditions and systems.
As an interdisciplinary field, Classics at UCSB offers an engaging, thought-provoking, and enjoyable academic experience while equipping students with valuable career skills. Mastering ancient languages adds intellectual discipline to humanities education. Alumni pursue diverse paths as archivists, legal professionals, advocates, media specialists, educators, performers, and business strategists. Their expertise in linguistics, analytical reasoning, and communication is sought after in public relations, cultural institutions, corporate sectors, and technology fields.
The Classics program features intimate seminars led by experienced professors, appealing to dedicated scholars.
