The Master of Arts in Classical Studies equips students to teach Latin or Greek language, literature, and culture at the secondary school level or to pursue doctoral studies. Participants develop comprehensive expertise in ancient civilizations, forming a foundation for original research and careers in higher education or other humanities-focused professions.
Program requirements: Completion of at least eight courses (32 credits) is mandatory for the MA in Classical Studies. While students usually specialize in either Latin or Greek, one course in Greek or Roman art/archaeology is advised. Those wishing to enroll in more than two cross-disciplinary courses must obtain permission from the graduate studies director.
This MA program develops essential language proficiency and scholarly research methodologies for advanced classical studies. Though students may focus on Greek or Latin, most attain working knowledge of both languages. The curriculum primarily prepares graduates to teach classical languages and cultures in secondary education or to continue toward a doctoral degree.
