The Classics Department provides graduate programs culminating in a Master of Arts degree, allowing students to focus on Greek and Latin languages and literature, ancient and pre-classical archaeology, or Greek and Roman history. Since these classical fields are interconnected, students must complete foundational coursework across all major disciplines.
The curriculum is comprehensive, typically featuring at least eight courses per semester. Subjects span from Bronze Age Greece to late Roman civilization, covering works from Homer to later Latin texts. Cross-disciplinary study is encouraged—history or philosophy students may enroll in relevant courses from those departments, while archaeology students can explore specialized anthropology classes. Philology students have the option to study Romance or Germanic languages or take English Department courses. Additionally, Hebrew Union College offers complementary Near Eastern studies courses.
