Students choosing this path will engage in rigorous study of Greek or Latin language and literature, typically preparing for doctoral-level work in Classics. The program focuses on developing proficiency with original texts while cultivating analytical expertise across various classical disciplines such as literary analysis, ancient history, philosophy, mythology, religious studies, archaeology, and linguistics. Passing the Ph.D. Comprehensive Exam can satisfy one of the Preliminary Translation Exam requirements for doctoral candidates. Additionally, those aiming for a Classics Ph.D. must demonstrate reading proficiency in German and another modern language (typically French or Italian). University of Colorado applicants to the Ph.D. program must pass an exam in one of these languages prior to completing their master's degree.
