The PhD program in theatre and performance studies provides an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to equip students for roles as academics, university professors, published researchers, and cultural analysts. This intensive program delves into theatre history and performance studies by critically examining archival records, theoretical frameworks, and performance works within these interconnected disciplines. Candidates without prior undergraduate or graduate qualifications in theatre (or related fields) might need to complete foundational courses before entering the PhD program. The School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies provides both MA and PhD degrees in Theatre and Performance Studies (THPF). This doctoral program fosters interdisciplinary learning, preparing graduates for diverse careers in academia and arts institutions. Students engage in thorough investigations of Theatre History and Performance Studies, analyzing historical documents, theatrical works, cultural performances, and stage practices through critical and theoretical lenses. The program cultivates scholar-practitioners. Prospective students lacking prior theatre degrees (or equivalent qualifications) may need to undertake preparatory studies before PhD admission.
Applicants for the PhD must also have earned MA or MFA degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. institution, or an equivalent degree earned at a non-U.S. institution with at least a 3.0 GPA.
