The Performing and Media Arts graduate program emphasizes research, writing, teaching, and practical application to equip students for academic and instructional careers. Participants can specialize in theater/performance studies or cinema/media studies, while also exploring innovative interdisciplinary connections between these fields. Each student's Special Committee consists of three faculty members: two from PMA representing their primary focus (theater/performance, cinema/media, or theater theory/aesthetics), plus one external member for their secondary concentration. Those with broader interdisciplinary interests may include a fourth committee member. Potential focus areas span: Directing/Acting Pedagogy, Film/Video Studies, Gender/Sexuality Studies, LGBT Studies, Africana Studies, Anthropology, Asian Studies, English, German, Music, Near Eastern Studies, and American Studies.
The PMA program mandates that all graduate students collaborate with their committee to determine necessary language study based on their academic goals. Some committees may require proof of proficiency in one or more languages. Students might demonstrate competency through prior academic records, additional language coursework, or by translating and analyzing materials relevant to their research.
Applicants must currently have, or expect to have, at least a BA or BS (or the equivalent) in any field before matriculation.
