Rooted in both innovative theoretical frameworks and time-tested research methodologies, the PhD program equips students with comprehensive academic training in history, critical analysis, literary studies, and teaching methods, alongside tailored creative opportunities. This program highlights theater and performance studies as multifaceted disciplines: encompassing academic investigation and writing (including practice-led research), teaching methodologies, and the arts of direction, creation, dramaturgy, and stagecraft. By prioritizing varied methodologies and cross-disciplinary inquiry, we ready Theatre & Performance Research graduates for professional paths both inside and outside academic settings.
Doctoral candidates in Theatre and Performance Research benefit from the facilities of a leading research university, personalized guidance from faculty in an intimate program setting, and access to award-winning productions staged by Florida State University's School of Theatre. Our globally renowned faculty engage in diverse creative and scholarly pursuits: investigating Jerzy Grotowski's legacy at the Workcenter, examining historical reenactments and collective memory across the Americas, the Global South, and MENA regions, chronicling regional theater movements and the Federal Theatre Project, analyzing arts funding policies, exploring performance intersections with trauma, political activism, and gender-based violence, studying musical theater and opera traditions, queer performance theory, and advanced theater pedagogy. Our analytical perspectives span performance & cultural theory, cross-cultural performance analysis, postcolonial frameworks, ethnographic methods, digital scholarship, art-science collaborations and community-based performance, curatorial practices, gender and sexuality research, phenomenological approaches, and studies of violence & trauma.

Qualification Requirements
A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, or a comparable degree from an international institution, with a minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average (GPA) in all coursework attempted while registered as an upper-division undergraduate student working towards a bachelor's degree, or A graduate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, or a comparable degree from an international institution, and Test scores from a nationally standardized graduate admission test that are acceptable for the academic program to which the applicant is applying.
Statement of Purpose:
A three-to-five-page statement addressing your research interests, career goals within and/or beyond the academy, reasons you are applying to this program, and any relevant academic, professional, and/or creative background. PhD applicants: please include a description of how your doctoral work builds on or differs from your previous graduate work.
Curriculum Vitae:
Include information on your academic background and relevant professional experience (presentations, publications, creative work, etc.)
Letters of Recommendation:
Three letters of recommendation from those familiar with your work. At least two of these letters should come from academic sources.
Examples of Scholarly Work:
Two writing samples (roughly 12-20 pages each) that demonstrate your ability to conduct original scholarly research at the graduate level.
Creative Portfolio (Optional):
In addition to the academic writing samples, applicants may submit digital evidence of creative work.
