The Dramaturgy specialization offers comprehensive training in this valuable sub-discipline, serving as a significant career advantage for Drama PhD candidates. We've observed increasing demand for dramaturgical expertise across academic institutions and professional theater companies. Participants engage in both theoretical exploration of dramaturgy and practical application through hands-on projects within the Drama Department. Both doctoral and MFA candidates are eligible to pursue this specialization.
To complete the requirements, students enroll in the Dramaturgy Theory and Method seminar, Dramatic Practicum course, and other approved classes. The theory seminar explores dramaturgy's historical development, foundational concepts, and critical frameworks through scholarly texts. During the practicum, students serve as production dramaturgs for department shows, collaborating with PhD faculty advisors and directors. Their responsibilities include researching and composing program notes for performance materials.
