The Philosophy Department provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, focusing on modern Anglo-American philosophy and its connections with other academic fields. Many doctoral candidates begin without an M.A., though they can earn one while progressing toward the Ph.D. The Ph.D. track mainly prepares students for academic careers in teaching and research, while the M.A. program serves those seeking to enhance their undergraduate knowledge or apply philosophical expertise to other professional areas.
Research in philosophy of mind increasingly adopts interdisciplinary methods, an approach embraced by all department faculty in this specialization. Their work explores diverse subjects such as consciousness (both unified and fragmented), mental representation, psychological theories, self-awareness, self-regulation, and related topics. Department members actively contribute to the University of Maryland Cognitive Science Colloquium and participate in the interdisciplinary Neuroscience and Cognitive Science (NACS) program.
