Cognition faculty explore diverse aspects of Cognitive Science through multiple methodologies. Their research spans language comprehension, visual scene interpretation, event perception, musical cognition, statistical learning mechanisms, memory systems, and conscious awareness. Historically, this department has adopted a distinctive ecological perspective, emphasizing that cognitive processes are most effectively studied within their natural environments and evolutionary frameworks. Investigative approaches encompass behavioral experiments, computational simulations, mathematical models, electrophysiological recordings, functional MRI, eye movement tracking, and cross-cultural studies.
Available research resources comprise: dedicated perception and cognition testing spaces, a social psychology lab configured for controlled experiments and observational research, electrophysiology and histology labs, surgical suites, animal housing and behavioral observation areas for vertebrate and invertebrate species, photographic darkrooms, machine shops, an educational technology studio for teaching research, networked computer systems with experimental control capabilities, real-time data processing workstations, and specialized facilities both on-campus and at remote field sites.
