The Comparative and Experimental Medicine program, an interdisciplinary initiative, equips students for careers in health sciences education and research. This curriculum focuses on a comparative analysis of biomedical studies. The PhD track welcomes qualified graduate students pursuing specialization in this field, particularly benefiting those holding medical degrees. For undergraduates with biology backgrounds, the program offers a unique chance to examine human and animal diseases through multiple scientific lenses. By combining expertise from veterinary and human medicine faculties, along with public health and life sciences specialists, the program expands its academic reach. The collaborative learning environment leverages resources from the Veterinary Medical Center, UT Health Science Center Knoxville, various life science departments, Herbert College of Agriculture, Tickle College of Engineering, and the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences. Contributing Graduate School of Medicine departments encompass Anesthesia, Dentistry, Medicine, Medical Genetics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pathology, Radiology, and Surgery. Veterinary Medicine participants include Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences, Large Animal Clinical Sciences, and Small Animal Clinical Sciences departments.

Qualification Requirements

All applicants must furnish three letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar with their scholastic or professional records.
Applicants generally will be expected to have a professional degree in one of the medical sciences (e.g., MD, DDS, DVM or equivalent) from an accredited institution or a master's degree in one of the biomedical sciences and a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score of at least 300 for the quantitative and verbal sections.
An individual having only a baccalaureate degree but with a strong background in the physical and biological sciences may be admitted upon presenting evidence of exemplary performance on the GRE.
Exceptional veterinary students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, may be admitted to the accelerated dual DVM-PhD program or may continue to be enrolled officially as veterinary students only and register for CEM courses. For the latter, such students may take advantage of registering for graduate courses to be counted as elective courses in the veterinary program.

For admission to a graduate program, an international student must have an equivalent 4-year bachelor's degree with at least a 3.00 on a 4.00 scale on all previous coursework or a 3.30 on a 4.00 scale on all previous graduate work. Grading systems other than the 4.00 scale are evaluated, upon receipt of transcripts, in accordance with standard practice. Programs may require a higher average GPA for admission. Applicants with work experience or who are entering graduate study after a number of years away from an educational institution, usually five years, will be given consideration with greater flexibility relative to GPA.

Minimum score requirements for admission to the Graduate School are:
a total score of 80 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT),
a total score of 550 or equivalent on the paper-based TOEFL (PBT), or
a 6.5 overall band score on the IELTS.
