Materials Science and Engineering is a cross-disciplinary field. Learners from both engineering and scientific backgrounds gain comprehensive knowledge in material physics and chemistry, thermodynamics, material structures, along with cutting-edge material technologies used in modern manufacturing. Research by faculty primarily focuses on creating innovative materials for contemporary applications in electronics, energy, biomedical fields, and advanced technology sectors. These materials can exist as bulk substances or thin films, encompassing ceramics, semiconductors, metals, polymers, and biomaterials. Faculty members play significant roles in key university initiatives including the University of Maryland Materials Research Science and Engineering Center, the Maryland NanoCenter, and the University of Maryland Energy Research Center.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
