The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in physics equips students for diverse scientific careers. Participants gain essential expertise to pursue advanced roles in scientific research, education, or development across academic institutions, government agencies, and private sector organizations.
The department provides research options spanning theoretical, experimental, and computational approaches to astronomy, astrophysics, biophysics, as well as condensed matter and materials physics. Doctoral candidates collaborate with faculty mentors to design customized study plans, culminating in a dissertation defense featuring original, publication-worthy research.
This program emphasizes micro- and nano-fabrication methods to manipulate and analyze thermal, magnetic, and electronic characteristics of materials systems. The research aims to explore fundamental principles of novel materials and translate these discoveries into technological innovations. Recent investigations concentrate on electronic, magnetic, and vibrational properties of amorphous solids.
Current research priorities focus on two key areas:
investigating thermal transport and thermoelectric properties in thin films and nanostructures across temperatures ranging from 300 mK to over 300 K,
exploring novel physical phenomena and practical applications of high-precision microcalorimeter detectors for x-ray and gamma-ray analysis.
