Welcome to the University of Maine's Chemistry Department. As Maine's sole institution offering Ph.D. and M.S. chemistry degrees, we take great pride in our program. Most graduate students pursue Ph.D. studies, with first-year students typically receiving teaching assistant positions. Nanoscience and Materials

At the nanoscale, materials exhibit strikingly different properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Our research explores how microstructure influences material performance in various applications, including plastics, coatings, ceramics, catalysts, and biomedical implants. This highly interdisciplinary field employs advanced instrumentation for imaging and manipulating matter at nanometer dimensions.
