The Department provides Master of Science and Doctoral degree programs through one of the country's top-ranked graduate programs in agricultural and resource economics. These programs emphasize applying cutting-edge microeconomic theory and econometric methods to challenges in environmental economics, agricultural economics, and development economics. Instruction is delivered by distinguished researchers who blend academic excellence with real-world policy expertise.
Our faculty features world-renowned experts specializing in environmental/resource economics, agricultural economics, and development economics. Their groundbreaking work has earned prestigious honors including Germany's Alexander von Humboldt Prize, the John Bates Clark Medal from the American Economic Association, and multiple Quality of Research Discovery awards from the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association. Many hold fellowship status in professional organizations such as the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, the Association of Environmental and Resource Economics, the Econometric Society, and the American Statistical Association. Faculty members have held leadership roles including presidencies of major economics associations and editorial positions for leading journals like the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management and the American Journal of Agricultural Economics. One professor currently serves as a research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research.
At a minimum, students entering either the Department’s M.S. or Ph.D. program are expected to have the following preparation:
Knowledge of macroeconomic theory at the intermediate level and microeconomic theory at the advanced level.
Knowledge of multivariate calculus and linear algebra.
Knowledge of elementary statistical methods.
