The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) program offers undergraduate students a professionally oriented, career-driven musical education. Students can specialize in areas like composition, jazz, piano, strings, theory, voice, or winds and percussion. The B.M. curriculum enables learners to train with distinguished faculty, perform in premier ensembles, and engage with cutting-edge music history and theory coursework. About 60% of the program focuses on music, delivering high-level training while emphasizing diversity, community involvement, and entrepreneurial skills. Graduates leave prepared for dynamic musical careers or admission to elite graduate programs. Though rigorous, students can combine the B.M. with another major (some even complete a Bachelor of Music Education with one additional semester).
Composition students enjoy yearly opportunities to have their works performed by acclaimed artists. Recent collaborations include readings by Ensemble dal Niente, Invoke, JACK String Quartet, St. Lawrence String Quartet, Spektral String Quartet, Telegraph Quartet, and yMusic. The biennial Walsum Composition Competition showcases diverse formats, from chamber choir to symphony orchestra. Orchestration courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels culminate in readings by the UMD Symphony Orchestra.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
