The jazz studies program aims to: (1) equip students for thriving careers as jazz musicians, composers/arrangers, and instructors, (2) deepen students' understanding and respect for jazz heritage and its musical roots, (3) foster student creativity while showcasing their work through performances and recordings at various levels, and (4) seamlessly blend jazz studies with other academic offerings in the College of Music and university curriculum.
Hone your craft at America's most prestigious Jazz Studies program. In 1947, the University of North Texas pioneered the nation's first jazz degree program. Now situated within the country's largest music school, UNT's jazz program continues to set the standard in jazz education, recognized globally for excellence in both music instruction and professional jazz circles. Our Jazz Studies program remains among the most esteemed in the nation and was the first of its kind. Performance opportunities abound with various ensembles, including the Grammy-nominated One O'Clock Lab Band that has toured internationally. The program also features the celebrated Jazz Singers and other ensembles like: Eight additional lab bands, Four Jazz Singers groups, The L-5 and Super 400 guitar ensembles, The Zebras contemporary group, The Jazz Repertory Ensemble, The Latin Jazz Ensemble, and The U-Tubes trombone ensemble
