Welcome to the University of Maine's Chemistry Department. As Maine's sole institution offering Ph.D. and M.S. programs in chemistry, we take great pride in our academic offerings. Our faculty and graduate students conduct diverse chemical research across multiple specialties. With intentionally small research groups, we foster close mentorship between students and professors. Numerous teams pursue interdisciplinary work, creating collaborative possibilities with engineers, materials scientists, biologists, and education researchers.
Most graduate students pursue Ph.D. studies, with teaching assistantships typically provided during the first year. Research assistantships become available, often beginning in year two. All students maintaining satisfactory progress receive guaranteed funding until degree completion.
Biological Chemistry
This interdisciplinary field bridges biology with various chemical specialties including bioanalytical, bioorganic, bioinorganic, and biophysical chemistry. Researchers employ chemical methods to investigate molecular and cellular biological mechanisms. Studies encompass molecular design, synthesis, and examination of structure and reactivity within biological systems.
