The Chemistry Department provides a Doctor of Philosophy program. The curriculum is designed to build a solid understanding of core principles while exposing students to cutting-edge developments in key chemistry fields. Beyond classroom instruction, every graduate student completes an intensive research project that serves as the centerpiece of their advanced studies. By pursuing original investigation culminating in a doctoral dissertation, students master scientific methodology and gain expertise in specialized research techniques.
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.
