The Department of Art provides a Bachelor of Arts program specializing in Art Education. Contemporary Art Education encompasses educational research, theoretical studies, studio technique development, art history comprehension, and teaching experience. Art Education majors complete their studies with a well-rounded liberal arts background, complemented by minors in studio art and art history. Through coursework in studio practice, art history, aesthetics, and art criticism, students build a thorough grasp of how artistic knowledge is structured and communicated. Furthermore, students explore research while examining the historical, cultural, psychological, and philosophical underpinnings of art education, alongside gaining real-world teaching experience. The University of Maine's Art Education Program holds accreditation from both the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), qualifying graduates for K-12 art teaching certification. This comprehensive preparation equips graduates for advanced studies in art education or various related fields.
