The History Department initiated its graduate program approximately 100 years back. Typically maintaining a modest scale, the department's admission process is highly selective, accepting only eight to twelve candidates annually. Graduate applicants may pursue a standalone M.A., enter with an external M.A. to work toward a Ph.D., or complete both degrees at the University of Kentucky. The M.A. serves as both a terminal degree and a stepping stone to the Ph.D. program. Alumni with M.A. degrees often find careers in secondary education, public sector roles, archival work, or private industry, while some advance to Ph.D. studies either at UK or elsewhere.

CV
The CV should indicate the applicant's education, qualifications for graduate study (such as language training), and other appropriate accomplishments.
Personal Statement
The personal statement should be a one- or two-page statement indicating the reasons for the applicant's interest in graduate study at the University of Kentucky. It should indicate if the applicant is interested in obtaining a terminal MA degree, a PhD degree, or the MA and PhD degrees. Applicants should make intellectual and scholarly interests the focal point of these statements.
