The Department of History provides graduate programs awarding Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Additionally, through collaboration with the College of Information Studies, students can pursue a dual Master's degree in History and Library Science. The MA and PhD programs feature specialized concentrations including: Ancient Mediterranean studies, Medieval history, Early Modern and Modern Europe, Global Interaction and Exchange, International relations, Jewish studies, Latin American history, Middle Eastern studies, Russian & Eurasian affairs, Technology, Science & Environment, US history, and Women & Gender studies. For MA candidates exclusively, the department offers African and Military history tracks. With over fifty faculty members and around 150 graduate students, the program demonstrates particular excellence in African-American studies, US history, and Middle Eastern studies. Additional strongholds include Western/Central European history, Russian/Eurasian studies, Ancient Mediterranean civilizations, Latin American history, and Women & Gender studies. Recently developing areas attracting growing faculty and student interest include Atlantic history, African diaspora studies, and Global Interaction and Exchange.
Admission to the Master of Arts program is offered to highly qualified applicants holding at least a bachelor's degree, normally in history or a related discipline.
