The Classics department provides Master of Arts degrees in both Classics and Teaching Latin, the latter through the MATWL (Master of Arts in Teaching World Languages) initiative. Additionally, we host the UK Institute for Latin Studies, which delivers an exceptional graduate certificate program focused on achieving advanced Latin proficiency through active speaking methods while exploring Latin's rich historical continuum from ancient times to modernity. Our M.A. in Classics, housed within the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, encompasses studies in Greek and Latin languages, literatures, and civilizations, complemented by interdisciplinary coursework in ancient/medieval history, philosophy, archaeology, classical art, Early Christian studies, and Renaissance scholarship. This program aims to prepare future Latin educators and equip students with comprehensive classical language training (including active Latin instruction) for advanced doctoral studies in Classics, History, Philosophy, Theology, or related disciplines.

Qualification Requirements

Requirements for admission to the Program in Classics are: An undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale. A combined score of 1000 (old scoring) / 297 (new scoring) on the verbal and quantitative parts of the Graduate Record Examination. The Director of Graduate Studies may admit students with undergraduate grade point average below 3.0 or lower GRE scores on the basis of a student's last two years of work, grades in Classics, or general academic competence. An undergraduate major in Classics, Latin, or Greek is not required for admission, but the Program suggests that entering students should have completed at least six semesters of either Latin or Greek and four semesters of the other language. Students lacking sufficient preparation in one of the classical languages may be required to remedy such deficiencies by taking undergraduate courses. (It is possible, but not guaranteed that a student may receive credit for one graduate course upon the successful completion of two undergraduate classes. Such a credit would apply to one course only.)
A one-page statement describing the applicant's reasons for seeking a Master's degree. If an applicant wants to be considered for financial aid (i.e., a fellowship or an assistantship), this is to be indicated in the opening sentence of the personal statement.
A list of Latin and Greek works read with approximate number of lines.
Transcripts.
GRE scores.
Three letters of reference (normally from former teachers).
International applicants whose native language is not English must submit either a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score. The University of Kentucky requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 79 (internet-based). For IELTS, a minimum mean band score of 6.5 is required.
