The University of Arizona's Classics Department provides graduate education culminating in a Master of Arts degree, with specializations available in Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, Classical Philology (focusing on Greek and Latin languages and literature), Latin Pedagogy, or Latin Philology. This program equips students with advanced knowledge of ancient languages and material culture, serving as excellent preparation for doctoral studies or careers in education at community colleges, private/charter schools, or public K-12 institutions (with state certification).
Since its establishment in 1985, our graduate program has experienced significant growth and now ranks among the top M.A. programs nationwide, drawing talented students from across the U.S. and internationally. Over the past decade, our graduates have gained admission with fellowships to renowned doctoral programs at institutions including Berkeley, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, Stanford, U. of British Columbia, U. of Chicago, U. of Michigan, U. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, U. of Cincinnati, UCLA, U. of Toronto, U. of Virginia, and Yale, pursuing advanced studies in Classics, Comparative Literature, History, and Philosophy.
Ideal candidates should possess foundational knowledge in classical languages, ancient history, and archaeology, with a requirement to demonstrate reading proficiency in German, French, or Italian by the end of their first graduate year. We welcome applications from students with strong undergraduate performance in Greek, Latin, or archaeology, even if their preparation isn't uniform across all areas. The program typically takes two years to complete, with faculty actively supporting students through nominations for various scholarships and through our dedicated Graduate Student Educational and Professional Development Fund.
