The Jazz Studies curriculum features a variety of ensemble sizes and an extensive selection of classes covering jazz history, improvisation techniques, and career development. Graduate-level instruction and performance experiences aim to cultivate the abilities required for professional jazz performance or advanced academic pursuits.

A distinctive aspect of UI's jazz graduate program is the option to produce a final recording project instead of a traditional thesis. The program is supported by four faculty members and four teaching assistants, serving over 300 jazz students annually. Teaching assistant positions may be offered to qualified graduate students.
