The University of Illinois provides a Master of Arts in Religion program at its Urbana-Champaign location. This MA program enables students to develop specialized knowledge in various religious traditions including Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, along with studies in US religious history and ancient/modern languages. The curriculum promotes interdisciplinary exploration beyond students' primary focus through diverse coursework and teaching engagements. Participants gain substantial experience instructing undergraduate world religion classes while critically examining the purpose and impact of such education. Typically, MA candidates acquire teaching experience across four semesters, which involves conducting weekly discussion sessions for groups of 30 students and evaluating academic assignments.
