Since the Master of Divinity is first a professional degree, the purpose of this program is to foster basic theological understanding and to develop initial pastoral competence on the part of students preparing for ministry. Accordingly, the M.Div. curriculum involves an in-depth study of the Christian, especially the Roman Catholic, theological tradition, and a supervised practice of ministry.

Practical Training:

  • Supervised Ministry: Students are required to complete six credits of Basic Supervised Ministry or a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (C.P.E.), followed by an Advanced Supervised Ministry course.
  • Integration Courses: Designed to integrate theoretical and practical aspects of ministry, including Introduction to Pastoral Theology and Capstone Seminars focusing on pastoral leadership.

Special Concentrations:

  • Hispanic Ministry: Additional requirements involving Spanish language and Hispanic/Latino studies with placement in a setting involving Hispanic ministry.

Language Requirement:

  • Reading knowledge of Latin, which must be satisfied by the end of the first fall semester in the program.
