The Practical Theology specialization offers an interdisciplinary curriculum for students examining real-world religious practices and conducting theologically based research on individual and communal behaviors. Learners can concentrate their studies within specific branches of practical theology (such as preaching, worship studies, pastoral counseling, faith formation, or spiritual development) or create a customized interdisciplinary focus with guidance from faculty. The program mandates 24 credit hours in practical theology courses, including 6 credits for the essential proseminar and research methods classes. Additionally, students must complete 9 credits in Divinity courses outside Area IV and 15 elective credits. The curriculum requires two courses that primarily address topics of socioeconomic status, gender/sexuality, racial/ethnic identity, disability studies, or international/cultural perspectives.
