The Department of Plant Biology at the University of Illinois boasts a distinguished history of cultivating many leading plant biologists worldwide. Our alumni have achieved remarkable success in academic institutions and private industries across the globe. The graduate program provides a flexible yet specialized curriculum, equipping students with advanced research techniques, analytical skills, and professional competencies crucial for thriving in plant science careers spanning molecular, physiological, and ecological studies. Working closely with advisors and committees, our master's and doctoral students design interdisciplinary research programs that foster innovative partnerships with departments like Crop Sciences, Animal Biology, Entomology, and Molecular and Cellular Biology. As the sole campus department examining plant life from molecules to ecosystems, we bridge fundamental and applied research. Ph.D. candidates must complete 96 credit hours, undergo a Two-Year Review for program continuation, and pass a Preliminary Examination testing broad plant biology knowledge and thesis proposal defense. Teaching experience is mandatory for Ph.D. students. The final phase involves original thesis research, culminating in an oral defense, public presentation, and approved dissertation submission.
