The MLS degree program is structured in two academic stages: the Pre-Professional Phase and the Professional Phase. In the initial Pre-Professional Phase, spanning the first two years of this four-year program, students fulfill UIS general education requirements and complete MLS prerequisite courses. The subsequent Professional Phase, covering the final two years, involves completing MLS core curriculum and gaining hands-on clinical training through practicum courses. This Professional Phase represents the NAACLS-accredited Medical Laboratory Science curriculum. Admission to the Professional Phase requires a secondary application process and formal acceptance into the MLS Program.
Enrollment in the MLS Professional Phase occurs exclusively during fall semesters. Admission requirements for the Professional Phase include:
Completion of all Pre-Professional Phase coursework (minimum grade of C-) before starting the Professional Phase
Maintaining at least a 2.5 GPA in MLS prerequisite courses
Successful admission to UIS
Acceptance into the MLS Program through separate application
