A surgical technologist supports surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other operating room staff. Also known as operating room or scrub technicians, these professionals set up the surgical suite prior to procedures. Their responsibilities include preparing patients, organizing medical instruments, and aiding physicians during operations.
This role is often mistaken for that of a surgical assistant. Though both work in the operating room, surgical technologists primarily focus on prepping the environment and passing tools to surgeons, while assistants directly aid surgeons during procedures.
Surgical assistants may manage bleeding, close incisions, or operate suction devices. Some technologists transition into assistant roles through additional training. Formal education programs also exist for those pursuing surgical assistant careers.
