Data science - the discipline of structuring, analyzing, and extracting meaningful patterns from vast datasets - requires diverse expertise. Data scientists possess strong computational skills. They're equally proficient in statistical methods. They grasp how their analyses impact various sectors, from private enterprises to public institutions. Moreover, they can translate their sophisticated work into clear explanations for any audience, demonstrating exceptional communication abilities.
To ensure every UIC data science student masters these competencies, we collaborated with three UIC colleges for foundational coursework: the College of Engineering (housing computer science), the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (containing mathematics, statistics, and communication departments), and the College of Business. Additionally, the College of Applied Health Sciences and the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs contribute to our specialized data science tracks.
The nine available concentrations for data science majors incorporate courses from five UIC colleges: engineering, liberal arts and sciences, business, applied health sciences, and urban planning and public affairs. Some concentrations focus entirely on one college's offerings, while others blend courses from multiple academic sources.
