The Lionel Hampton School of Music, nationally accredited, offers this major for aspiring professional performers, composers, and educators. This comprehensive liberal arts program also equips students for diverse careers in business, law, medicine, and beyond. Music majors develop their artistry through performance, composition, analysis, and active listening. Rigorous training hones musical skills while coursework in theory, history, and performance establishes a robust foundation in humanities and social sciences. Admission requires an audition.
Many degree candidates pursue public school music teaching certification. Prospective music educators must demonstrate proficiency on their primary instrument (or voice) through required auditions. The program offers specializations in K-12 instrumental music, K-12 vocal music, or an instrumental track with vocal components. Secondary music educators can expand their qualifications with approximately 25-40 additional credits per subject. The degree culminates in a semester-long off-campus student teaching placement. The Teacher Intern Handbook serves as an essential guide for this culminating teaching experience.
