Our program equips students with the essential skills to teach art from kindergarten through 12th grade while meeting California's requirements for the fifth-year, single-subject teaching credential. Humboldt's Art Department is recognized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, offering an approved subject matter waiver program.
The art education program blends hands-on service learning, studio art classes, and art history studies. Foundational courses introduce students to diverse art mediums, techniques, and tools, building the necessary skills for effective art instruction. Advanced courses allow specialization in specific studio disciplines while developing teaching methods to create inclusive art curricula for diverse learners.
Students explore the California Visual and Performing Arts Framework and Content Standards to craft effective teaching strategies and lesson plans. The program incorporates service-learning opportunities, enabling students to design curricula and teach at Humboldt's Studio School for youth and nearby schools. Additionally, art education majors assist in training local high school students as museum and gallery docents.
