The Bachelor of Fine Arts in art education prepares students for K-12 art teaching certification through a rigorous blend of studio practice, art history studies, and pedagogical training.
Beyond honing their artistic abilities, students gain practical teaching experience by instructing art classes in nearby schools and managing the Young Artist's Workshop, where community children participate in art classes at the School of Visual Art and Design.
The program fosters essential teaching competencies like effective communication and student engagement techniques, while providing specialized training in curriculum design and instructional planning. Students enhance their artistic proficiency through diverse studio courses spanning photography, 3D design, drawing, painting, ceramics, and printmaking. The BFA curriculum offers elective flexibility across Carolina Core requirements, studio arts, and art history courses.
International freshman applicants must be high school graduates (students that have the equivalent of a diploma in the United States).
English proficiency is measured through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A score of at least 550 on the paper based exam or 77 on the internet based TOEFL is required. USC also accepts the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the PTE Academic Test. Students must score at least a 6.5 on the IELTS, or at least a 53 on the PTE.
