The Art Education focus caters to individuals pursuing a career in art instruction. This curriculum fulfills Kansas state certification standards for teaching art at all grade levels (PK-12) in public schools. The degree comprises three key elements: foundational art studio work, art history studies, and teaching methodology courses. These are complemented by general education requirements and specialized professional education coursework. The Art Department operates from Pittsburg State University's historic Porter Hall, a three-level structure erected in 1927 as the campus library. This facility offers expansive studios, exhibition spaces, and learning areas that foster artistic growth across various disciplines including ceramics, printmaking, jewelry creation, textiles, three-dimensional art, drawing, painting, photographic arts, art historical studies, and art pedagogy. Porter Hall houses two main-floor exhibition venues - the Harry Krug and University Galleries - which showcase rotating displays by established artists worldwide. The Second Floor Gallery highlights collaborative community art initiatives. Visiting artists featured in these galleries often conduct lectures or hands-on sessions, offering students valuable exposure to professional artistic practices and perspectives.
