The Language and Social Interaction (LSI) program equips students for professional roles like language instructors and communication specialists across various institutional contexts, while also providing foundational knowledge for graduate studies in SLS, applied linguistics, and related social science fields. This program approaches social life as primarily shaped through communicative exchanges and discourse. It investigates the relationship between contextualized communication and linguistic practices, exploring how language acquisition, variation, and evolution develop through social engagement. A key research focus involves analyzing interaction patterns in educational environments and other institutions, linking these micro-level interactions to broader societal structures.
This program aims to develop expertise and research skills in diverse areas, methodologies, and subjects, such as:
multilingual communication in society,
linguistic diversity and evolution,
pidgin languages, creoles, and vernacular forms,
global English usage,
mixed linguistic styles,
language alternation,
beliefs about language,
identity and language, sociolinguistic theory,
language acquisition in social contexts,
and analytical approaches including discourse studies, conversational analysis, and language use in context.
