The Advanced Graduate Certificate (AGC) in Second Language Studies, launched in fall 2000, offers specialized training for individuals holding graduate degrees (MA, MEd, MS, PhD, EdD, etc.) in applied linguistics, language education, or related disciplines, or who are currently pursuing such degrees at UH Manoa. This program caters to professionals seeking to refresh their expertise or incorporate current advancements in the field. Current University of Hawaii (UH) graduate students can pursue the AGC simultaneously with their primary degree program (master's or doctoral). The AGC also serves as a pathway for students with limited prior training in SLS who aspire to eventually enter the PhD program in Second Language Studies.
Since the AGC emphasizes personalized study plans, learning outcomes differ significantly among participants. Typically, graduates of the SLS AGC program gain modern expertise and competencies in one or more of these key areas:
Core knowledge areas: second language analysis, acquisition, teaching methodologies, and usage
Practical application of research discoveries
Implementation of research methodologies
More precisely, every AGC recipient will accomplish these objectives:
1. Understanding of specialized subjects and ideas relevant to their focus within second language studies
2. Capacity to conduct structured examinations of SLS concepts to enhance professional practices
3. Expanded opportunities for career growth and/or further academic pursuits
