TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language), alternatively known as Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), shares similarities with TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). This discipline covers instructional techniques, fundamental principles, approaches for diverse learners, curriculum development, lesson preparation, emphasis on the four core skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), and evaluation methods. The field incorporates insights and methodologies from linguistics, education, and related disciplines. This program prepares individuals to teach ESL to adult learners in U.S. community colleges and adult education programs, as well as to adults internationally. The Linguistics/TESL Department prioritizes student achievement while emphasizing fairness and inclusivity. Departmental studies explore human language through multiple lenses, incorporating formal, cognitive, and social linguistic perspectives alongside language pedagogy theory and practice. Linguistics coursework highlights language's role in social contexts, examining both linguistic structures and communicative practices. Several courses address how language can both reflect social inequalities and serve as a medium for personal expression. TESL courses focus on implementing linguistic and educational research in teaching methods, evaluation systems, and curriculum design. The department cultivates awareness of language learner diversity and varied educational environments. Faculty members are dedicated to outstanding teaching, research, and community engagement, recognizing that understanding linguistic and cultural differences is essential for building inclusive communities.
