The Italian studies program provides both Master of Arts and PhD degree options. Each semester typically features a diverse selection of courses and seminars that span different literary eras. Classes generally convene two or three times weekly, covering broad themes focused on specific periods or genres. Seminars meet once per week for two-hour sessions, delving deeper into specialized subjects. Over a two to three-year cycle, the curriculum encompasses all centuries of Italian literature along with various cultural aspects like film studies, civilization, and language structure. Language proficiency is prioritized, with graduate-level instruction primarily conducted in Italian.
Students develop expertise in both academic research and pedagogical skills. The program ensures financial support for all accepted candidates. New teaching assistants typically receive four to five years of guaranteed funding, adjusted based on prior graduate study experience.
International applicants must have a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree.
