Ph.D. candidates selecting the Buddhist Studies specialization within Religious Studies must complete a minimum of five core seminars in Buddhist Studies, spanning at least two cultural regions, with three courses concentrated in their primary area of interest, alongside the Department's 200-level requirements.
Students must achieve advanced proficiency (typically equivalent to four years of study) in their focus region's language. They must also develop reading skills in an additional Asian language (generally two years of study) and either French or German. Additionally, students should attain knowledge of at least one non-Buddhist religion relevant to their focus area, such as Hinduism, Jainism, Daoism, Confucianism, or Shinto. This requirement can be fulfilled through supplementary seminars, guided reading, examination components, or advanced coursework.
