The Music Education Department at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa (UHM) delivers an extensive curriculum focused on preparing qualified educators for both public and private school systems. Students pursuing undergraduate studies can earn a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) with specialization options in choral/general music or instrumental music (band/orchestra). The program's teaching certification is reciprocally accepted in more than 30 U.S. states.
Over the last five years, over 80% of UHM's music education graduates secured full-time teaching roles in Hawaii, working in general music, choir, and instrumental programs. Some of these positions were newly established, reflecting growing recognition of music's benefits for children's development.
Our programs align with local educational requirements while maintaining national accreditation through the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Students gain comprehensive training in both musical and pedagogical disciplines, complemented by 200+ hours of structured fieldwork in K-12 environments before student teaching. This hands-on approach helps develop teaching competencies, self-assessment abilities, and professional development planning.
UHM also provides MA programs (with optional certification) and PhDs in Music Education. Most graduate students are working Hawaii music teachers who typically take four credits per semester, allowing flexible degree completion. Beyond core coursework, graduate students can participate in various ensembles, receive private instruction, and explore ethnomusicology with emphasis on Asian Pacific traditions. Financial aid opportunities exist for graduate candidates.
