The entomology program provides opportunities to pursue PhD degrees. Graduate students will work independently on research projects under the guidance of an advisor from the Entomology Graduate Faculty, exploring various research fields. Thesis and dissertation topics can be chosen from multiple subject areas. The graduate curriculum includes coursework in biological pest control, insect ecology, insect physiology, plant pathogen transmission by insects, systematics, phylogenetics, and specialized topics like genomics, conservation, and pest management.
Prospective PhD candidates should hold an MS degree in entomology or a related field from an accredited institution. Applicants with only a bachelor's degree may request admission to the PhD program after first enrolling in the MS program. Note: Acceptance into the graduate program requires a faculty member's commitment to serve as the student's advisor.
The PhD program aims to equip students with comprehensive knowledge across entomology disciplines, specialized expertise in at least one area, and the ability to conduct independent research. Career opportunities for PhD graduates include academic positions in teaching, research, and extension, as well as roles in private industry research, consulting, or government agency management.
Program learning objectives include:
Developing and demonstrating biological competency and skills
Gaining essential entomological knowledge for professional advancement
Enhancing communication and literacy abilities
Cultivating creative and critical thinking skills for independent research development
Applicants to the entomology graduate program should hold a bachelor's degree with coursework in entomology and biology, covering general biology, introductory entomology, integrated pest management, one year of chemistry, and relevant mathematics or statistics. Any gaps in undergraduate preparation can be addressed during graduate studies.
